Policies

The mission of this page is to document the general policies for different Sail PC Committees.

Jr. Sailing Camp

  1. CAMP CANCELATION - Mountain weather can produce challenging conditions for teaching sailing. However, local forecasts can often be incorrect, early or late. In general, camp will proceed rain, snow, or shine. However, camp may be canceled if air quality or extreme weather events are forecast:

  • AIR QUALITY CANCELATION - Camp may be canceled if the air quality index is rated as UNHEALTHY (151+) as measured via the KSL Weather Air Quality Network (https://www.ksl.com/weather/airQuality). Some of the stations to be included in the decision making are the stations closest to the Jordanelle (In 2021 these included “HIDEOUT - OUTLAW GOLF CLUB”, “RETREAT AT JORDANELLE”, and “HIDEOUT - CARVING EDGE”). Target for timing of this decision will be by 6am on a camp day and will be announced via email.

  • EXTREME WEATHER FORECAST CANCELATION - Snow, thunderstorms, and high-wind events and other extreme weather forecasts may cause cancelation of camp. The Jr. Sailing Camp leadership will attempt to make these types of cancelations by 10pm the night prior to camp and will be announced via email.

  • COVID-19 - While in normal times, on-land activities inside are typically possible, the pandemic creates additional challenges for running classes inside with students in close contact. This is an additional consideration when canceling camp.

Race Committee

24-August-2021

These policies are meant as guidance for racers and the race management team. The Racing Rules of Sailing, the Notice of Race (NOR) and the Sailing Instructions (SI’s) overrule any policies mentioned below.

  1. MISSION - Run safe, high quality races with a focus on running more races than running perfect races.

  2. COMMUNICATIONS - The Race Committee will communicate openly with competitors on and off the water in an effort to educate sailors and improve overall racing. E.g. In addition to posting the course on the course board, the Race Committee will also announce, as reasonable and possible, course details to competitors. Further, while it is the responsibility of racers to start correctly, the Race Committee will attempt to notify boats if they are over early.

  3. CANCELING OF RACES - The Race Committee strives to run safe races and will take into account weather forecasts, but in general, if weather is a potential issue, the races will only be canceled at the Jordanelle just prior to launching dinghies or shuttling crews to moored boats. Other considerations include:

    • Air Quality - Racing may be canceled if the air quality index is rated as UNHEALTHY (151+) as measured via the KSL Weather Air Quality Network (https://www.ksl.com/weather/airQuality). Some of the stations to be included in the decision making are the stations closest to the Jordanelle (In 2021 these included “HIDEOUT - OUTLAW GOLF CLUB”, “RETREAT AT JORDANELLE”, and “HIDEOUT - CARVING EDGE”).

    • Extreme Weather Forecasts - Mountain weather can always be a challenge, however, many of the extreme weather forecasts for the region can be earlier or later than forecast and/or miss the Jordanelle entirely. Therefore, if an extreme weather event is forecast, it is up to the Race Committee to review and communicate with the fleets and senior Sail PC leadership to determine if an early cancelation is in order. A typical approach for this may include:

      • Discussion with Fleet Captains ~8 hours before racing. It is expected that the Fleet Captain would make a decision based upon a majority of their fleet.

      • Communications with racers that the weather is under review (typically an email to competitors by noon on a weekday race, or 9pm the night prior to a day race)

      • A final go/no-go on an early cancelation within 3 hours prior to racing (typically an email to competitors).

      • If no early cancelation, a final decision will be made at the Jordanelle, This may include an on-shore postponement to wait for a weather system to materialize or pass-by.

  4. DECISION MAKING - The Race Committee are the final decision makers on if races should be canceled. It is expected that the Race Committee will consult with Fleet Captains regularly. If there is no clear obvious decision or potential conflict of interest issues, a senior Sail PC leader (typically the President or VP) will be consulted to assist with the decision.
