Mother Nature could have been declared the real winner as she provided temperatures in the mid 70’s for Saturday’s Laser racing and for Sunday’s ski racing she tossed in a snow storm.
On Saturday the Laser racing was postponed for over one hour permitting the race course to be moved to the north side of the Jordanelle Reservoir to shelter the racers from the passing front. The weather system brought a solid 18 to 20 knots of breeze that gusted up to 30 knots. The frequent wind shifts also brought random lulls that resulted in many of the racers capsizing to weather and the gusts virtually assured that everyone wiped out on at least one gybe. 38 degree water made dry suits a necessity and guaranteed that no racer stayed in the water for more than a few seconds.
Tom Hagan, the PRO and his team kept the racers safe and the race course square in spite of the blustery and shifty conditions. Buster Pike and Geoff Hurwitch tied in first place for the day. The top three positions were 1) Buster Pike, 1) Geoff Hurwitch, 3) Jeff Kluge.
On Sunday the group swapped their boats for skis and headed to Park City Mountain Resort. Once again Mother Nature tossed out a challenge to the contestants. The base surface was still soft from the prior day’s summer like temps. She then tossed in a cold front with light snow and a bone chilling breeze. Dave Staley, the oldest ski racer, put his years of experience to the test and bested the field with a time of 44.60 seconds. The top 3 ski racers were 1) Dave Staley, 2) Kip Merritt, 3) Ryan Walsh.
Based on the combined results the overall winners were 1) Geoff Hurwitch, 2) Jeff Kluge, 3) Ryan Walsh. The consensus of all of the competitors is that the Park Skigatta combines both great competition and camaraderie in a location that is absolutely perfect for this type of event. The KUTV 13 show Wasatch 360 will televise a portion of the event on April 28th. Next year the Park City Sailing promises to work more closely with Mother Nature to insure ideal conditions.
