High School Sailing
Through a collaborative effort with Sail Park City, High School Sailing in Utah was established in 2021 when one of our youth sailors expressed interest in college sailing. We quickly formed a team for Park City High School as a path towards that goal. To facilitate program growth, a progressive summer sailing program was established for new sailors and experienced sailors to be ready to sail for the 4-week fall high school sailing season. The inaugural season in 2021 grew from 1 sailor to 4 sailors, with the team competing in ILCA/Laser class high school regattas in California. The subsequent year added teams for Silver Summit Academy and The Waterford School, growing the overall team to 9 students. In 2022, 3 high school specific Lasers were added to the existing Sail Park City fleet and practice was expanded to include Club 420 boats for additional Club 420 and CFJ regatta opportunities. A development team was also formed in 2022 as a way for younger students to train alongside the High School team as a feeder program for developing athletes. The Utah High School Sailing Teams train together in a combined after-school program in the fall though Sail Park City at the Jordanelle Reservoir, Heber City, Utah. Typically, the team will travel to 1 or 2 regattas in fall season. Participation in travel regattas is optional.
These are the only high school sailing teams in the state of Utah registered with the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). Students may be eligible to receive .25 high school PE credits for their participation. Utah is a member of the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association (PCISA) district, along with California, Hawaii, Arizona, and Nevada. We expect to create additional high school teams as the program develops with big dreams of hosting a PCISA regatta on our home turf one day.
