Meet the 2015 Coaching Team

Park City Sailing is excited to welcome a great staff to the shores of the Jordanelle this summer.

Returning this summer are Scott VerMerris who served as Head Instructor for the first 2 years of the program (this will be year 6), Cole Schreiber – Head Instructor & Race Coach, and Instructors Quinn Olpin and Morgan Nuffer.

New arrivals this summer include:

  • Alex Miller who’s already helping out with the PC High School Sailing Club
  • Chris Schram from Connecticut with sailing experience in CT, NY and VT
  • Venice Aureli from Rochester, New York who is psyched to spend a summer in the mountains before next year in Hawaii
Scott VerMerris
Scott VerMerrisDirector of Education
Grew up sailing on Lake Erie out of Mentor Harbor, Ohio. When not sailing, Scott is the Athlete Manager and Chief Brand Ambassador at Icelantic Skis. Scott is in the process of launching a guided experiential education/therapy charter program for families and student groups the Caribbean. Scott is currently studying for his USCG Captain’s license.

Some of Scott’s favorite memories as a junior sailor were sailing on high wind days with older kids and also racing with older kids who could teach from inside the boat (while planing).
As an instructor I have really enjoyed seeing junior sailors apply their skills to racing. The Junior regattas are always a blast.

Cole Schreiber
Cole SchreiberHead Instructor
Learned to sail at Portland Yacht Club in Falmouth, Maine. After this summer, Cole will be returning to school to finish University. The most fun Cole has working with junior sailors is seeing them being passionate about the sport that he loved so much growing up (and still loves). Cole enjoys being a part of Park City Sailing and helping to build a sailing culture in Utah.
Don Crandall
Don CrandallSTEM (Science, Technology, Math & Engineering) & Sailing Coach
Don will be leading the two 1-week PC Sailing Science & Sailing classes this summer. Don started teaching science in 2007 and teaches 6th grade science at Ecker Hill Middle School in Park City. Don has two kids learning to sail with PC Sailing. In addition to science, Don teaches skiing at Park City Mountain Resort, has been a wilderness guide for at-risk-youth and has worked as a licensed electrician.
Alex Miller
Alex MillerInstuctor
Learned to sail at the Centerboard Yacht Club, South Portland, Maine. Alex graduated from University of Maine as well as attended Roger Williams University. After the sailing summer, he’ll be returning back East to spend time with friends/family before the ski season starts

Most fun Alex has had as a jr sailor was trying to load a greased up watermelon out of the harbor and onto hisopti. The watermelon cracked on the bow of my boat and we all started throwing seaweed/watermelon chunks at each other AND the instructors.

Chris Schram
Chris SchramInstructor
Chris learned to sail at Norwalk Yacht Club in Connecticut. Chris attends UVM (Vermont) where he’s study psychology. Chris also teaches skiing at Smugglers Notch VT.

The most fun Chris has ever had coaching sailing would be the time one of my students a 9 year old named Alex won his first regatta in green fleet, he was super stoked. And it was particularly satisfying not because he won but because when he first started sailing a few weeks earlier he was terrified of the boat and sailing.

Morgan Nuffer
Morgan NufferInstructor
Morgan learned to sail as a young child with her dad in Michigan. When she was 8 Morgan started flying to Wisconsin to sail every summer. She has loved being out on the water since being little.

This fall Morgan will attend the University of Utah and pursue a career in nursing with an emphasis in neo-natal nursing. Morgan completed her EMT as a senior in high school and looks forward to using those skills while attending college.

Morgan returns for a second season teaching sailing with PC Sailing in 2015.

Quinn Olpin
Quinn OlpinInstructor
Quinn learned to sail with Park City Sailing when she was 11 years old! She has been sailing ever since. Both as a student, volunteer, laser racing, and finally as an instructor. This will Quinn’s second year as an instructor in Park City.

Quinn just finished her first year of college at Ithaca College in New York. Quinn studies International Relations with a Spanish Minor and plans to study abroad in South America soon and work on her Spanish.

Quinn has loved growing up in the Park City Sailing program! As an instructor, Quinn loves seeing when it clicks for students and they understand how to sail and how much fun it is.

Venice Aureli
Venice AureliInstructor
Venice learned to sail at Rochester Yacht Club in New York. After this summer, Venice will be moving to Hawaii to study (and sail) at the University of Hawaii.

The most fun Venice has had in Jr Sailing: Three years ago her coach organized a 420 race team at RYC for the summer. Though she was already friends with many of those invited to the team she didn’t expect to become as close as they are today. Venice made her best friends that summer. Everyone kept learning and competing and growing up together for the next several years. Venice couldn’t imagine what the past few summers would have been like without traveling, camping, sailing and spending so much time with her team.
